A Bold and Delicious Beverage

ree

Vanilla Latte, from Bellecour in Wayzata, MN.

One of my earliest memories of coffee is that it was a forbidden drink in my family, but it only applied to kids! My parents occasionally drank coffee in the morning. But every time my siblings and I would ask for some, they would tell us it's only for adults and kids couldn't have any. Coffee would slow down our brain development and that was it. No other explanation. I was always so bummed out, because it smelled so bold and delicious! I totally believed my parents, too! They usually had instant Folgers coffee in their cabinet. Medium roasted. And sugar was the sweetener of choice. Occasionally, condensed milk. Once in a very, very blue moon, we each would get a little taste from my parent's mug.

It's so interesting to me that I didn't drink much coffee throughout high school and college. I think what my parents told us growing up just really stuck with me. I recently asked my mom if she remembered how we weren't allowed to drink coffee because it would slow down our development, and she doesn't recall! Seriously? LOL!! Now in my adult years, I treat my parents to fancier coffee. The photo above was a breakfast date with my mom from last summer. As for my dad, he gets Starbucks! What is your earliest memory with coffee?
